What is Love? February in Kindergarten

Hello!

With spring right around the corner, I wanted to let you in on what we have been up to in late winter in the Salmonberry Kindergarten.

In February, we continued our exploration of rainbows! We did several science experiments, made predictions and observations. The walking rainbow and the capillary action of a carnation in dyed water were fun explorations in color and water.

We moved! A lot. We played games with the parachute outdoors, we folk danced, we played math train games, we danced with scarfs, we did yoga and stretching.

At Valentine's Day we asked "What is love?" and got lots of interesting answers. "Hearts and rainbows" and "double liking someone" were common answers from the kids.

We played many imagination games including, but limited to: doctor, veterinarian, animal hotel, valentine store, and bakery.

We investigated numbers in ordinary things around the classroom through building number portraits. We played several math games, one based on the book, Papa, Please Get the Moon for Me and Lift the Bowl, aimed at teaching number sense. Our older group has also been working on their numbers 11-20. Practice at home if you can!

After many months of phonemic awareness, we have finally started to connect sounds to concrete symbols through direct instruction of letters. We started with the letters 's, m, d, a, and p.' We practiced making each sound and corresponding letter through art. We made our own visual dictionary with words starting with each letter.

Reading several versions of Jack and the Beanstalk, taking this classic fairy in many directions. We planted pea plants to climb up to our 'giant's castle', compared our hand size to that of a giant's and retold the story through mounting a theater production.
