October Happenings

Hello Families!

So much has been going on here in kindergarten, it's hard to know where to begin.  During the month of October, we have been in apple-land most of the month, thoroughly enjoying our apple CSA from Waldron Island. We've been counting, measuring, singing about, reading about, reciting poems about, cooking with, and of course, eating lots of eating! We've made applesauce, apple crisp, apple chips, and apple pie. We read and reenacted the life of Johnny Appleseed and made apple art.
.

We have also started phonemic awareness work, through listening activities and lots of rhyming poems! They have pretty much memorized these, so why not practice at home? Here are a few we worked on this month:

Apples, Apples

Apples juicy, apples round
On the tree or on the ground.
Apples yellow, apples red
Apple pie, and juice, and bread.
Apples crunchy, apples sweet
Apples are so good to eat!

Five Little Pumpkins

Five little pumpkins sitting on a gate.
The first one said, "Oh, my it's getting late"
The second one said, "There are witches in the air."
The third one said, "But we don't care."
The fourth one said, "I'm ready for some fun!"
The fifth one said, "Let's run and run and run!"
Then 'woooooo' went the wind
And OUT went the lights.
And five little pumpkins rolled out of sight.

In keeping with the season, we also have been exploring pumpkins. We have been weighing, measuring, carving and reading about pumpkins this week of Halloween.

We have been exploring lines both curvy and straight through many, many avenues. As a precursor to writing and recognizing letters, practicing lines with manipulatives and art are fun!

Our handwork this month was a circular weaving project. Over, under, over, under.

During quiet time, we have been listening to guided meditations from the New Horizon Holistic Center. They are short imaginative stories, the children have loved them. You can check out their Youtube channel here. We just started listening to the Winnie the Pooh audiobook.

In art we have been exploring the concepts of observational drawing and the medium of watercolor.

Lots of leaf raking and jumping in piles. Such cooperation was demonstrated in this endeavor!

October has been the month of really settling into our rhythms. Children have taken the responsibility of jobs in the daily clean up of our space. This fits into nicely with our new theme of families this month. November will explore the questions:

What is a family? What do our families look like? How are they similar and different? What are your family traditions and foods?

We will be exploring these questions alongside the concept of thankfulness leading up to Thanksgiving break.

Thank you all for sharing your lovely kids with us.

Love, Emmy and Kelley
