Spring at Salmonberry
Hello all!
Happy Spring to you and yours! Here were some of the happenings this March in kindergarten.
We began our art collaboration with the Senior Center. The first two projects were a success, with excellent senior participation. We made masks and did a bird water color project. Each time, seniors and children helped each other, asked questions and enjoyed each others company. We are looking forward to several more sessions.
We also went on a fun springtime field trip to visit the lambs at Lum farm and walk the fairy house trail in Grindstone Harbor. The children have been inspired to build fairy houses in the school yard, so much so that a fairy began writing to them! A mystery mailbox showed up in the yard with letters from Lilac, the Salmonberry Fairy to the children. Lilac serves as an excellent inspiration to encourage writing and the children have been very excited to receive mail in return.
Along with celebrating the change of season, we planted our peas in the garden. While digging, an interest in earth worms were expressed. We read several non-fiction books about earthworms and created an worm farm to watch worms do their important work. This exploration was completed with a huge worm mural, created with the help of Paul's class.
As we quickly approach the welcoming of our chicken eggs, we have begun a new exploration into eggs and nests. This past week we made nests and blew and dyed eggs. What lays an egg? Oviparous animals! These studies will carry us through May.
In literacy work we have continued our direct instruction of letters with 'L' for leaf, 'B' for butterfly, and 'C' for caterpillar (and chocolate chip cookie). We have also been working hard on recognizing lower and upper case letter matches. In math we have continued on our one-to-one correspondence with finger addition and math games. We have also been working on number sequence and recognition.
Here are some photos of our recent fun!
Thanks! Emmy and Shannon
